Learning Objectives Intravenous Bootcamp
i. Learn the armamentaria needed for an I.V. (Catheter, drip, or heplock)
ii. Discuss cleanliness, sterility, prevention of infection, and sterile technique.
III. Learn to set up and position all armamentaria prior to catheter insertion.
iv. Vein anatomy, vein insertion sites, challenging I.v. insertions.
V. Tourniquet etiquette and study of the appropriate vein.
vi. Skin preparation, localization, catheter insertion, putting it all together
drip/heplock attachment.

vii. Drawing blood into a syringe with a straight needle.
viii. Catheter fastening.
ix. How to remove an I.V catheter and drip.
x. Proper disposal of infectious armamentaria and I.v. drips.
xi. Possible complications related to I.V. insertion and removal.


DENTAL OFFICE EMERGENCIES
  1. General emergency response protocol
  2. Hypotension/Hypertension
  3. Laryngospasm
  4. Acute airway obstruction
  5. Cardiopulmonary arrest
  6. Acute allergic reaction to drugs
  7. Angina pectoris (possible myocardial infarction)

HANDS-ON AIRWAY MANAGEMENT
Airway:
  • Nasal cannula; Simple face mask; Non-rebreathing face mask; Oral (Guedel) airway; Nasopharyngeal airway; Laryngeal mask airway (LMA); King airway; Oral endotracheal tube (OETT) - sizing and types of adult tubes, children's tubes; OETT with stylette; Eschmann stylette; Laryngoscope - Macintosh, Miller, Phillips blades; Glidescope; CMAC; McGrath Laryngoscope; AirTraq; Combitube; Bag-mask-valve; Simulated Human Trachea Cricothyrotomy

Airway Positioning: Head tilt; chin lift; turn off midline; jaw thrust; sniffing position; neck pillow; shoulder bolster; pre-intubation airway positioning

Airway Emergency Scenarios: Cough; Laryngospasm; Acute airway obstruction; Foreign body; Cannot ventilate/cannot intubate; Emergency cricothyroidotomy with Pig Trachea

Emergency Scenarios: General emergency response; hypotension/hypertension; cardiopulmonary arrest; allergic reaction to drugs; Angina pectoris possible myocardial infarction; Emesis/aspiration of vomitus; Convulsions and seizures; Oversedation; Hypoglycemia; Asthma/bronchospasm
